ROCK OUT DEVILS
This week many of our Devils open their season up for their school. GOOD LUCK TO ALL ATHLETES
Remember: You know what to do. You've put in all this preparation.
1. WARM UP 45 min before your race...You know how to do it!
-if you have spikes DON"T JOG IN THEM....spikes go on when you start your strides.
2. Relax and do your thing. Whatever you need to do to be ready. Don't worry what other kids are doing.
3. It's okay to be nervous and scared. YOU WANT TO BE! It shows you care about what you're doing. If you weren't nervous then you should be worried. You should expect that's it's going to happen. So when it does come, you'll almost feel good.
4. The hardest part is standing on the line waiting for the gun to go. Those feelings immediately go away when the gun fires so don't worry. Just remember when the gun goes RUN YOUR BUTT OFF!!!
5. HAVE FUN!!!! just tell them to relax and race. You've had plenty of time trials and some have already raced. It's just like practice. Nothing to freak out. HAVE FUN AND RACE. Everyone there is nervous and everyone gets the feelings to not run. Just relax and when the gun goes the feeling goes away and you just run!
6. Remember "Rubbing is Racing". I'm not telling anyone to body-check, someone, but when you put 8-16 kids on a line, people are going to get bumped. And it's okay. Just like in soccer you can bump, same thing goes in track. If you get bumped hold your ground and keep racing. Don't let it psych you out!

NOTE: See the pic...That's coach Julia scared out of her mind. When the gun went off........ SHE RACED!!!!!

COACHES SETTING THE BAR
Our Beaches Blue Devils coaching staff set a HUGE example yesterday at the TDSSAA Regional Championships at Birchmount Stadium. The hardware brought home shows exactly what pushing through the hard workouts and having a positive race mentality is all about.
Julia Kitevski finished had an outstanding day of events. She showed only determination as she stepped on the line of each of her events. She took home 1st the 800m, 1st in the 1500m, 1st in the 3000m, and helped Birchmount take the 4x400m title.

Ben Devito also had an exceptional day destroying the field in his events. Ben finished 2nd in the 800m (only seconds behind 1st), 1st in the 1500m, 1st in the 3000m and helped Birchmount roll the 4x400m to victory.
These are our coaches. Fully involved and pushing for excellence. They have goals and they do whatever it takes to hit it! I believe the kids are in great hands.

COACHES ROLLING
This thursday, both Ben and Julia will be tearing up Birchmount Stadium at the Regional Qualifier for OFSAA. The meet is suppose to end at 4:30pm. If it does go late, please meet and warm-up on your own in the fields beside the stadium (where we met for cross country, by the shot put area). The final event is the 4x400m at 4:30pm which both of them are runnning. If you get there early, go out and cheer the coaches on!!!

As some of you might know, The TDSB are allowing spikes again for racing for grades 6, 7 and 8
If you want to purchase spikes what to know:
On the track,I'll be honest, spikes will help; doesn't matter what event. They're lighter, and grip better. There are so many different types of spikes out there. Distance, Sprints, middle distance, jumps, throws, Cross country etc. there's everything.
Differences between sprint spikes vs. distance
1. spike plate -typically sprints are harder and put you more on toes
2. heel-because you run slightly different in distance than sprints (typically the more distance the more heel)
3. Pins- (sharp things are bottom) less pins typically means more distance
there's also lots of other stuff at times like straps zippers etc, but thats mostly flash for this age group because they're not running that fast. But if they're cheap go for it, it's just not a necessity.
I would tell anyone to stick away from a cross country spike. They're heavy, have a big heel and not as functional as track spikes.
An entry level spike is what I would suggest. They're cheaper, and more functional. Until a kid is in their last yr/two of high school I think these would be perfect. They run so many events that it works the best, and with kids growing a shoe size a yr, it'll be the best bang for your buck
Obviously SAUCONY is amazing!! I would recommend saucony to anyone because their stuff is da bomb, but there are other entry level ones
Here are a couple
Saucony Spitfire
Nike Rivals
Asics Hyper
These are two great entry level ones. They're functional for a variety of events. If you see letters after the spikes, they typically mean "S"=sprints (100-800), "MD"=Middle Distance(400-1500), "D"=800-10km "XC"=cross country (bad)
You can buy online
or various shoes stores
sportchek
national sport
running room (overpriced)
running free
Note: SPIKES ARE FOR STRIDES AND WORKOUT. you do not warm up in spikes. So you'll still need running shoes.
If you have anymore questions please don't hesitate to write
